Low-Doc Equipment Finance: A Placement Guide for ABN Lending

Self-employed clients rarely arrive with two years of pristine financials. Low-doc equipment lending exists precisely for them — if you know what different lenders actually accept.

Low-Doc Equipment Finance: A Placement Guide for ABN Lending — Oxcel News & Analysis cover

The fastest-growing part of many finance brokers' books is ABN lending that never touches a tax return. Low-doc and streamlined equipment finance lets established businesses buy income-producing assets on the strength of their trading history, conduct and the asset itself — and the placement skill lies in knowing where each scenario fits.

What lenders are really assessing

Strip away the matrices and low-doc credit teams weigh a familiar cluster: time in ABN and GST registration (two years is a common comfort line, with newer ABNs pushed to specialist pricing), the asset itself (standard, easily resold assets like utes, trailers and popular yellow goods attract the best settings), deposit or property backing (either can unlock limits and pricing), and credit conduct across directors and the entity. A clean file on a standard asset for a two-year-old ABN is often a same-day approval; each variation from that profile narrows the panel rather than closing it.

Common placement traps

Private sales trip up new brokers — many streamlined products assume dealer purchases, and private-sale deals may need inspections or different lenders entirely. Asset age at end-of-term catches out older equipment. And GST registration gaps, director credit issues or unusual assets don't kill deals; they just mean starting with the right lender instead of discovering the wrong one after submission.

The network advantage

This is a category where a deep panel and a live scenario desk earn their keep: policy niches shift, appetite moves with the economy, and the difference between a decline and an approval is often just knowing which credit team wants exactly this deal this month.
