How to become a finance or mortgage broker in Australia — the eligibility criteria and every onboarding document you'll need, with costs, providers and shortcuts. You don't need them all before you apply.

How to become a broker: your document checklist

Everything ASIC, the industry bodies and our lender panel require before you write your first loan — exactly as our onboarding team will request it.

1. Certificate IV in Mortgage Broking (or Diploma)
  • The first action to take is to attain your Cert IV in Mortgage Broking.
  • You can visit the AAMC website to complete your course online.
  • Cost: approximately $597 (one off).
  • You are free to choose any other licensed provider.
2. Anti-money laundering certificate
  • No more than 2 years old (refresher or new can be done online via aamctraining.edu.au).
  • If new to the finance industry, please provide the MFAA / FBAA initial compliance pack.
3. Industry body membership (MFAA or FBAA)
  • Current FBAA or MFAA membership certificate.
  • FBAA → fbaa.com.au — cost: $499 yearly.
  • MFAA → mfaa.com.au.
  • We will provide your mentor certificate once the onboarding contract is signed (contact us for a mentor letter).
  • If onboarding under a corporate entity, both the company and the loan writer must be members.
4. AFCA (Australian Financial Complaints Authority) member number
  • Visit afca.org.au/members and apply for membership (ACRs).
  • Use 100702 as the licensee.
  • Cost: $65.98 per year.
  • If onboarding under a corporate entity, both the company and the loan writer must be members.
5. Financial Abuse Awareness Education Certificate
  • Access for non-FBAA members: visit the FBAA Membership Portal → login → click "Education Institute" → "Member Compliance Courses" → "Get Access".
  • Access for current FBAA members: activate your account (registration code: FBAA-QBgs-V2As) → login via FBAA Education Institute → "Member Compliance Courses" → "Get Access".
6. Professional indemnity insurance
  • You can get a quote and purchase online from Scott & Broad, or email sally@scottbroad.com.au.
7. Police clearance
  • Must be less than 90 days old at the time of submission.
  • You can apply at afp.gov.au — cost: $42 (one off).
8. Driver's licence & Medicare / Passport
  • Preferably driver's licence and passport.
  • If a passport is unavailable, a Medicare card or birth certificate is required.
9. Resume
  • Required for many panel lenders — must be current and professional.
  • Must include your most recent employer/employment and list 2 contactable referees.
  • Referees must have been your previous supervisor/employer.
10. Bank statement
  • The first page of your bank statement.
11. Citizenship certificate / IMMI visa grant notification
  • If your passport is not an Australian passport, we will require a citizenship certificate OR IMMI visa grant notification.
12. Exit letter from your previous aggregator
  • Applicable for transfers only.
  • The exit letter must include the phrase "left under no adverse circumstances".
13. Trust deed
  • Required if your ABN is linked to a trust.
